  • Common side effects may include gastrointestinal issues, nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset, and decrease in vitamin B12 levels .
  • Considerations:
    • Take Metformin at the same time each day. Take missed doses as soon as possible unless it’s almost time for the next dose. Do not double dose.
    • Before starting Metformin, inform your healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, such as kidney or liver problems, heart disease, or respiratory issues.
    • If you undergo any medical procedures or surgeries, temporarily discontinuing Metformin might be required, so consult your doctor.
    • Alcohol consumption while on Metformin can increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so it’s advisable to limit or avoid alcohol.
    • Metformin can interact with certain medications, including those used for heart conditions, so inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking.
    • Women taking Metformin who plan to become pregnant or are pregnant should discuss the potential risks and benefits with their doctor, as the medication’s use during pregnancy may vary.
    • Avoid grapefruits as they can prevent the liver from breaking down the medication
