Spironolactone

  • Trade name: Aldactone and Carospir
  • Spironolactone is a medication used to treat conditions like high blood pressure and fluid retention.
  • Common side effects include dizziness, nausea, hyperkalemia, sexual dysfunction, GI irritation, and increased urination.
  • Considerations:
    • Take missed doses as soon as remembered, unless it is almost time for the next dose. Do not double dose.
    • Spironolactone may cause hormonal changes, such as breast tenderness or menstrual irregularities, particularly in women.
    • It can increase the risk of high potassium levels, which can be dangerous for individuals with kidney problems or taking other medications that affect potassium levels.
    • Pregnant women should avoid using spironolactone due to potential risks to the fetus.
    • It may interact with certain medications, such as ACE inhibitors, potassium supplements, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), so it’s crucial to inform the doctor about all medications being taken.
    • Spironolactone should be used with caution in individuals with liver disease or electrolyte imbalances.
